Folk Dancing, Giving Foot Service to Diversity

Dance Zone hosts two international folk dancing groups:

  -  The NMU International Dance Club – Learn a new culture through movement.  FREE and
open to the public.  Meets on Tuesdays from 7:15 PM; Lesson at 7 PM for new dancers
  -  The Marquette Folk Dancers - meets on Fridays from 7 PM at Dance Zone.
      $3 per person per evening

Both groups welcome newcomers and visitors.  We adjust the evening's schedule to accommodate new dancers and/or visitors.  Just let us know if you want to do a particular dance or dance style.  We are very flexible.

Who We Are

We are a group of individuals who love learning about different cultures through their music, costume and dance.  We enjoy dancing and learning new dances.  Several of us travel to various workshops in the US and abroad each year to maintain our dancing skills.  We make a concerted effort to stay true to the origins of each dance in our repertoire.

Come dance with us

Many folk dances are easy to learn; our groups are willing to help others learn and always welcome newcomers or visitors from other folk dance groups.  We are eager to share our love of dancing with anyone interested in learning.  We are also available to visit with schools or other non-profits and share our love of dancing by either performing or teaching.

What is Folk Dancing?

Folk dances are considered those dances which originate with common people throughout the world.  These dances use traditional music from the region of origin.  In the US, we have a many dances from around the world taught by experts who have studied the dances as done by native dancers.  Folk dances can illustrate cultural ceremonies, religious events, or other aspects of life.  Above is a video of an Italian Quadrille, or dance for four couples.
